Alaska Brown Bears

Picture
Contested Resources

As I emerged from a wooded trail along Brooks River in Katmai National Park, I heard a great commotion of roars and splashing.  The ruckus was about complete when I came to a clearing where I could catch a view of two bears and the salmon they were fighting over.  I am indebted to Loi Nguyen for sharing the instant that enlivened my pace and inspired this painting.

Original painting size: 24" x 36"

Acrylic on hardwood panel

Going Home

This female brown bear and her large cub found it considerably easier to walk along several miles of the park road than across the tundra in Denali National Park, stopping traffic for hours as they did so.

Original painting size: 30" x 20"
Acrylic on board
Completed 2011

Fair Catch

The coastal brown (grizzly) bears know when the red salmon return to the Brooks River in Alaska's Katmai National Park. By early September they are patroling the river banks and waiting below Brooks Falls to make their catch.

Acrylic on board
Completed 2010

 Below the Glacier

As we forded a river below Halo Glacier in Katmai National Park, Alaska, a female brown bear and her cub approached us, apparently seeking protection from an aggressive male bear.  As they departed, the cub turned and gave us a final glance before continuing on.

Original painting size: 18" x 12"
Acrylic on watercolor paper, over hardboard
Completed 2009
