After the Rush
Chilkoot Pass was a major hurdle for prospectors headed for the Klondike gold fields in the 1890's. As more prospectors chose this route to the gold fields, enterprizing outfitters set up a variety of businesses to haul supplies. While hiking the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail from Dyea, Alaska to Lake Bennett, British Columbia, we came upon the remains of this abandoned freight wagon in the snow above the pass. Blue Mouse Cove
I was in Glacier Bay with a team of geologists working on peak above Tidal Inlet, when the park's day tour boat circled the inlet and headed up the West Arm of Glacier Bay. The Fairweather Mountains are in the background. The small cove between the boat and the mountains is Blue Mouse Cove, where we spent the night. Click here for photos from Glacier Bay.

Chignik Bay
As the ferry pulled into Chignik Bay Harbor in Alaska's Aleutian Islands in 2007, I caught a glimpse of this derelict and grounded vessel, behind which a series of waterfalls poured from high mountain snowfields. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Serptentine Black Sea Ice on Turnagain Arm
Turnagain Arm earned its name when in 1778 when Captain James Cook was forced turn his ship around in his search for the Northwest Passage. In this late afternoon in mid-January, we look through the Chugach Mounains overlooking the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge towards the horizon on Cook Inlet. The dark colored ice results from the combined effects of strong tidal range (about 30 feet), glacial silt, and cold weather. Much of the ice remains behind, freezing to mud flats when the tide goes out twice a day. Rolling in the returning current those iceblocks can become thoroughly coated with mud. At the same time, clean and white ice stiil spills out of the glacier-fed rivers and snakes its way to the ocean.

Three Mines Below Castle Mountain
Alaska's Kennecott Mine worked the worlds richest copper deposits from about 1904 to 1939. This September view over the gravel strewn surface of the Kennicott Glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, shows fall colors and three mines below Castle Mountain. The Kennecott Mill complex is among the red buildings. The Banjo Mine was built on the large glacier in the top center of the painting. Cable tramways connected the mines with the mill below. I made two week-long trips to the park during 2010, spending several days exploring historic areas and camping in the backcountry. During the first trip in June, the top of the mountain was visible. My second trip was in autumn, when the clouds were lower, but the fall colors were turning. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Where is the Ice Going?
The inspiration for this painting was an Alaska Native family that I encountered during a spring walk along the beach in front of the Inupiat Heritage Center and near the Barrow Environmental Observatory in Barrow, Alaska. The father was gazing at his infant child bundled in his wife's parka. Their daughter looked directly at me, as if to ask a question. The man's coat was white, as is traditional for whalers and other hunters on sea ice who need to blend into their environment. The Arctic sea ice is melting fast, and the ocean is now reclaiming much of the land on which Barrow and several other villages were built. Rapid environmental change also portends changes to traditional lifestyles. Thin ice and open water conspire to make the life of a marine hunter more difficult and dangerous than ever. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting and a photograph of spring sea ice off Barrow.

Standing high on windy Mount Ballyhoo in the Aleutian WWII National Historic Area, a woman points towards Tabletop Mountain, the remains of a Holocene Age volcano and flanking vents on Unalaska, one of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.
