Below the Glacier
As we forded a river below Halo Glacier in Katmai National Park, Alaska, a female brown bear and her cub approached us, apparently seeking protection from an aggressive male bear. As they departed, the cub turned and gave us a final glance before continuing on. Bighorn Sheep in a Mountain Berry Patch
Mountain slopes in Alaska's Denali National Park blaze with scarlet blueberry bushes and low growing bearberry by September. Although the park road will soon close to snow, late season visitors can be treated to exceptional scenery and close encounters with Dall sheep and other wildlife. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting, and here for photos taken along the park road.

Contested Resources
As I emerged from a wooded trail along Brooks River in Katmai National Park, I heard a great commotion of roars and splashing. The ruckus was about complete when I came to a clearing where I could catch a view of the bears and the salmon they were fighting over. I am indebted to Loi Nguyen for sharing his photograph of the instant that enlivened my pace that day and inspired my painting.

Fair Catch
The coastal brown (grizzly) bears know when the red salmon return to the Brooks River in Alaska's Katmai National Park. By early September they are patroling the river banks and waiting below Brooks Falls to make their catch. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Family of Musk Ox
A family of Alaskan musk ox cluster together to confront an approaching figure. It's a special treat for me to see a herd or even a solitary musk ox in the wild when visiting Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center also provides wildlife viewing opportunities in a natural environment close to Anchorage, Alaska. Going Home
This female brown bear and her large cub found it considerably easier to walk along several miles of the park road than across the tundra in Denali National Park, stopping traffic for hours as they did so. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Safe Passage
On a trip to the Gates of the Arctic National Park, Alaska in 2009, we climbed the slopes above the Okomilaga River to view migrating caribou. We hid behind these stone hunting blinds made for the same purpose by Native hunters long ago. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Tag - You're It!
As we prepared to board a float plain in Kodiak Alaska, this river otter deliberately teased a dog by leaping onto the dock and shaking water onto the dog, before it turned and hopped back into the water. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.
